Buying time on a service you may already have
Subscription codes add a period of membership to an account. That is a different purchase from a game key in one important respect: the thing you are buying interacts with what the account already holds, so the same code can be worth full value, partial value, or nothing depending on the account it lands on.
Before buying, check what the account currently has and when it expires. The most common disappointment in this category is not a bad code — it is a good code that could not be applied the way the buyer assumed.
Stacking, and where it stops
Most services let you add time on top of an existing membership of the same tier, up to a maximum. That ceiling is real and it is enforced at redemption: a code that would push the account past it simply will not apply, and you are left holding a code you cannot use now.
Mixing tiers is where it gets awkward. Adding a lower tier to a higher one, or the reverse, is handled differently by each platform — sometimes converted at a ratio, sometimes queued to start when the current tier ends, and sometimes refused. The conversion arithmetic is rarely in your favour, so a cheaper tier bought to extend a more expensive one is usually not the saving it appears to be.
If a membership is currently paid monthly by card, a prepaid code and an active recurring payment can also collide. Cancel the recurring payment first, redeem second.
Trials, new-member offers and what they exclude
Introductory pricing is generally issued for accounts that have not held the subscription before, and the platform checks. A trial code redeemed on an account with any history of that service will be rejected, and the listing does not always mention the condition.
This catches people who cancelled years ago and consider themselves new. The check is against the account's record rather than against current status, and it does not lapse.
Region is checked on redemption
Subscription codes are issued per market and validated against the account's registered country, exactly as gift cards are. A code bought for one region will not redeem on an account registered to another.
The prices genuinely do differ by market, which is why these listings exist at spreads that look too wide. The spread is real; the ability to use it usually is not, unless your account is already registered where the code came from.
What you actually keep
A subscription is access, not ownership. Games available through it leave when the catalogue rotates or when the membership lapses, and saves generally persist while the entitlement does not. Anything you bought outright at a member discount stays yours; anything you played because it was included does not.
That distinction is worth being deliberate about when a long subscription is cheaper than the two games you actually want. Sometimes the subscription is still the right buy. Sometimes buying the two games means still having them in three years.
Before you buy
Check the current expiry and tier on the account, the stacking ceiling, and whether the offer is new-member only. Match the region. Cancel any recurring payment before redeeming a prepaid code.
And decide whether you want access or ownership, because that question — not the monthly price — is what makes a subscription a good or bad purchase for a given person.
What happens when it lapses
Games installed through a subscription stop launching when the membership ends. They usually remain installed, which means the disk space is still gone and the reinstall is avoided if you resubscribe, but they will not start.
Saves generally survive, locally or in the service's cloud, so a lapse followed by a return months later normally picks up where you left off. That is worth knowing before deleting anything in frustration on the day a subscription ends.
Anything bought outright at the member discount stays yours permanently — that is a purchase, not access, and it is unaffected by the membership ending. Where a subscription offers a discount on titles in its own catalogue, buying the one game you keep returning to converts rented access into something you own, which is often the better use of the discount than another month.
Before the term runs out
Decide a week before, not on the day. Subscriptions lapse quietly, and the practical cost of forgetting is either an unwanted automatic charge or an evening discovering that the thing you sat down to play has stopped launching.
If you are stopping, check what leaves with the membership: online play on consoles, cloud saves, and any monthly credits or included titles that have not been claimed. Claiming what you have already paid for before the term ends costs nothing and is easy to overlook.
If you are continuing, that is the moment a prepaid code is worth buying rather than letting a card renewal run at the standard rate — which is the one saving in this category that depends entirely on having looked at the date.
