A wallet code is money, not a product
A gift card adds a balance to an account. It does not grant a game, it does not expire into anything else, and once it is on the account it can only be spent in that store. That makes it the most flexible thing on a key site and the least reversible.
Because it is money, the checks that matter are different from a game key. There is no edition to confuse, no launcher to mismatch and no DLC trap. There are exactly two things that can be wrong — the currency and the account region — and both of them are extremely difficult to undo after redemption.
Currency is the hard constraint
A wallet code carries a currency, and it can only be redeemed by an account whose wallet is in that currency. A euro code will not redeem on a dollar account. There is no conversion step and no partial credit — the code is simply not for that account, and support is generally unable to move it.
Denominations are fixed, but a balance can be built from several cards, and most stores will take a wallet balance plus a card payment for the remainder. A card that does not cover a purchase is an inconvenience rather than a problem.
Region, on top of currency
Console gift cards add a store-region check to the currency check. A card bought for one country's store will not redeem on an account registered to another even where the currency matches, which catches people in shared currency zones who reasonably expect it to work.
Check the account's registered country rather than your own. On console accounts especially, that value was set when the account was created and is often not what the owner assumes years later.
A card does not change the prices you see
A balance is spent at the prices your account is shown, which are set by your store region. Loading a wallet does not move you into a cheaper market — the currency rule that decides whether a card redeems at all is the same rule that fixes what you will pay afterwards.
This trips people up because gift cards are one of the few products whose face value is quoted in several currencies side by side on a comparison page. The card that costs least in your own currency is simply the best-priced card; it is not a route into different pricing.
Where a card genuinely is below face value, that discount is the whole of the saving — and it is a real one, because it applies to everything you subsequently buy with the balance. It stacks with sales rather than replacing them.
Codes are bearer instruments, and scams follow
Whoever has the code has the money. That single fact drives most of the fraud in this category: a photographed code, a code read out over the phone, a code sent to somebody who asked for it — all spend exactly as well as one you redeem yourself.
Nobody legitimate asks to be paid in gift cards. Not a tax authority, not a utility, not a support agent, not a delivery service, not somebody you met online who needs help urgently. That is the whole of the advice, and it holds without exception.
Redeem promptly rather than storing a code, and buy from a store that delivers it to an account you control rather than posting it into a chat. A code sitting in an inbox is money sitting somewhere with no lock on it.
Spending a balance sensibly
Refunds on most platforms return to the wallet rather than to the original payment method when a purchase was made from a balance. The money is not lost, but it is committed to that store permanently, which is a reason not to load a balance far beyond what you intend to spend there.
Balances also make a useful spending limit. A wallet-funded account with no card attached is a straightforward way to cap what a child or a younger sibling can spend, and it works without any of the parental-control machinery that people set up and then forget the password to.
Before you buy
Match the currency to the wallet and the region to the account, in that order. Confirm which store the card is for — Steam Wallet, PlayStation Store, Xbox, Nintendo eShop and the various retailer cards are not interchangeable, and their names are similar enough to skim past.
Then treat the code as cash until it is redeemed, because that is exactly what it is.
